As part of plans to improve the working conditions of teachers, the government has disbursed over 13.9bn/- between 2009 and 2013 for construction of their houses.

This was revealed in the House by the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (Regional Administration and Local Government ), Mr Kassim Majaliwa, when responding to a question posed by Mr Suleiman Nchambi Suleiman (CCM-Kishapu).

Mr Suleiman had sought to know government plans to improve teachers' working conditions, noting that the professionals in Kishapu District were operating in pathetic state.

However, the deputy minister reaffirmed government's commitment to improve teachers' welfare and has embarked on various strategies such as the primary and secondary schools education development programmes.

"Implementation of the programmes has seen the government setting aside funds for construction of houses all over the country," said Mr Majaliwa, noting that Kishapu alone received 148.6m/- of the 14bn/- disbursed.

According to him, 2015/16 financial year, 183 multi-unit houses will be built in 105 district and municipal councils. He said tender procedures for implementation of the projects had been completed.

He added that in the second phase of the Secondary Schools Education Development Programme, the government will renovate and complete construction of 1,200 wards schools.

He said the first phase saw 264 schools being constructed at a cost of 56.3bn/-, part of which was spent on construction of teachers' houses.

The deputy state minister further informed the house that the government had procured in bulky 2,500,000 science and arithmetic books for secondary schools worth 25bn/-.

He said the books had improved the student-book ratio to 1:2, from the previous ratio of 1:5.
